Triamterene: What Is It, And How Does it Work?

Triamterene is a prescription drug that is primarily used to treat edema. Triamterene is also known as Dyrenium which is its trade name and it is often marketed under various other names such as Dyazide and Maxzide. This drug is a diuretic that has potassium sparing characteristics. Diuretics are responsible for increasing the rate of urine or causing forced increase of urine or any type of fluid excretion in the body. Triamterene which has no affinity for potassium is hence instrumental in treating edema without causing a deficiency of potassium in the body, a major concern while treating fluid retention.

This medication is most widely used for edema which is also known as fluid retention and it is occasionally used to treat hypertension. Treating hypertension or high blood pressure and water retention owing to PMS (premenstrual syndrome) are off label uses of this drug.

Triamterene is almost always used along with hydrochlorothiazide, which is also a diuretic. Although Triamterene is very effective in treating edema still it is not considered to be a cure for congestive heart failure which is in most cases the cause of edema. Triamterene For Edema
Edema is a medical condition where the body stores excessive fluids, typically water, in various parts. There may be accumulation of excess water beneath the skin, in and around bodily organs such as lungs, can cause swellings in the feet and legs and can often lead to several other problems. The most common reason for edema or water retention is congestive heart failure. Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump out enough blood that it used to. What it does is it allows the formation and accumulation of fluids in various parts of the body owing to a shortage of blood supply. The symptoms of edema are breathing problems (shortness of breath), swelling in the legs and feet, weight gain, fatigue, cough and an increase frequency of urinating.

Triamterene is the best known medicinal treatment of edema because it increases the amount of salt and water that is excreted out through urine after being channelized by the kidney. Due to its potassium sparing characteristic, this medication does not reduce the potassium levels in the blood which is a problem with other diuretics, again see your doctor for you own personal situation and to see what is best for you. An increased removal of salt and water through urine results in a reduction in the blood volume which not only triggers the heart to pump out more blood but also leads to reduction in the levels of water accumulation at various parts of the body.
